Work History:

My first teaching job was in Crescent City, Florida in 1985.  They were desperate for an SLP that I had to go between Five schools!  I was at an Elementary, Middle & High School as well as a Head Start and Migrant Head Start, because I could speak some Spanish.  Crescent City was close enough to Kennedy Space Station that we teachers could actually see the Challenger explode right before our very eyes, on our lunch break.  We closed schools that day because it was so cold, but teachers were at work for a planning day.  I’ll never forget that moment, as we lost one of our own.

I went to Duval county Schools in Jacksonville in 1987.  I was just at one school, Wesconnett Elementary.  I was the first SLP in that county to get, “Teacher of the Year” and I went on to be in the top ten finalists for Duval County Teacher of the Year.  I then was promoted to Administration as a Speech/Language Specialist for the birth-to five for FDLRS/Child Find.  I was the youngest Administrator in Duval County!

After obtaining my Master’s Degree, I worked in: hospitals/rehabilitation centers/head/injury/oncology/trach’s & vents/neurology/radiology & did modified barium swallow studies with children and adults.  I’ve done over 1000 modified barium swallow studies and I’m sure I must light up like a lightening bug when I sleep – Ha!

I went back into the schools in 1998 in Manatee County.  I worked at an Elementary School for one year and then I was promoted to Administration as a Specialist/Diagnostician for Speech & Language, for the birth-to-five children.  I worked with several agencies, including the Early Intervention Program.

I went into Private Practice as the Owner of The Communication Station, Inc. in 2000.  I have worked in several private schools/daycare settings/homes as well as here at SSIS, a fantastic Charter School.  I’ve been here at SSIS since 2003.

On a personal note, I have a strong background in Autism Spectrum Disorders.  I became an SLP when my youngest sister was diagnosed and I was the one who taught her how to talk when I was only a teenager!  I used to take her to her SLP and just knew from that moment on, that I was meant to be one!

My personal philosophy, is to always follow a child’s lead.  If you can reach them, you can teach them!  I also believe in the power of positive reinforcements.  Words are very influential and one must choose them wisely, when working with children.  Build upon the child’s strengths to teach new words/concepts.  Every Child CAN Learn!
