Capoeira

After-School Program

The “Brazilian Martial Art” Capoeira used After-School is an innovative, effective, and enriching program that affirmatively creates positive transformations in Children.

Capoeira training and it’s philosophies initiate positive results all over the world, from the youth that live on the streets of Brazil, school aged children who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, and to our very own SSIS students.

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a blend of martial art, music, game, acrobatics, and dance of Brazil.  It was created over 500 years ago by African slaves brought to Brazil as a fight for freedom. Now it has evolved into an amazing martial art that is played all over the world.

Why Capoeira?

In this day and age children are faced with many challenges, because they are bombarded with TV, video games, fast food, etc. It is becoming difficult to inspire children to be active, and to make healthy choices.  Obesity is one of the leading problems in America, and we are letting our youth fall victim to a cycle of unhealthy habits. Children need a safe and fun outlet to channel their energy in a positive and healthy way. It is no surprise why more doctors and teachers are recommending Martial Art training for children. Capoeira can give them confidence and instill in them a love for exercise, and also keep alive their playful, imaginative, and creative nature.

What do children gain from training Capoeira?

Having Capoeira as an After-School program will greatly develop children’s personal, social, and physical growth.  Capoeira is taught in a group environment, which builds confidence and respect in children’s relationships with their peers and instructors. Discipline, the value of loyalty, and responsibility are taught and instilled in children while learning Capoeira.

Capoeira is one of the most physically challenging Martial Arts, and children need to be challenged to grow and succeed. Physically they will be developing agility, muscular strength, force, speed, balance, and motor coordination. It is proven that when you develop your body in a healthy way that you will also develop a healthy mind. Children training Capoeira tend to have greater focus and learning abilities in school.

The fun, playfulness, and amusement of Capoeira will spark creative, artistic, and musical inspiration in children training this beautiful art.  Children are able to creatively express themselves which helps build their personalities positively. It has also been observed that because Capoeira uses music, children are more willing and comfortable exercising and learning the movements.

Capoeira brings forth a great deal of culture, and history from Brazil. Children sing in Brazilian Portuguese and start to learn the language. Children who know more about other cultures are more aware and appreciative of the world. Learning Capoeira broadens their horizons, and opens a door to a beautiful new culture.

With great confidence that these statements are true and that the unique practice of Capoeira helps to positively develop youth, we propose this program to create a possibility for a greater future for children and their families.

Parent testimonial

“I am a doctor who is currently specializing in ADHD research and I’m certain that the exercises you do can help children overcome ADHD by improving their health, focus, and muscular coordination. I know for my own son, I consider Capoeira an integral part of his childhood education. And I personally think that if parents only knew the benefits of Capoeira for children’s brains and health, they would make sure their kids went to as many of your classes as possible. Thank you!” Dr. Blaise Ryan
